YEREVAN, Aug 4 – Sputnik. The Metsamor nuclear power plant is protected by sophisticated air defense systems of Armenia and Russia, said Armenia’s permanent representative to the international organizations in Vienna, Ambassador Armen Papikyan in an interview with “Energy Inteligence”.
During the July of aggravation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, the representative of the defense Ministry of Azerbaijan Vagif Dargyakhli said that the missile system, in service of the Azeri army allow with high accuracy to hit nuclear power plant in Metsamor. Dargyakhli added that this can lead to a catastrophe for Armenia.
“To protect the Metsamor nuclear power plant from possible attack-we have the appropriate system. Of course, on the basis of the issue of security, not all items can be made public. But you can be sure, to strike nuclear power plants is not easy,” said Papikyan.
According to him, the station is under the protection of sophisticated tiered defense system.
“The sky of Armenia defends jointly with the relevant units of air defense of Russia, according to current international treaties,” said Papikyan.
He noted that safety and security of nuclear plants has always been a priority for the Armenian government.
Answering the question about the consequences of a theoretical attack on nuclear power plants, Papikyan said, “We can recall the consequences of the Chernobyl accident. I think this is the easiest answer to the question”.
The Azerbaijani armed forces on 12 July fired on Armenian positions in Tavush border and tried to attack them. As a result of retaliatory fire from the Armenian side the enemy back to their positions after suffering losses. On the morning of 13 July, the Azerbaijani armed forces resumed shelling of the Armenian positions. Until July 16, with some interruptions were also carried out attacks on Armenian border villages. International organizations and mediator countries urged Armenia and Azerbaijan to the world.
The evening of July 21 a special unit of the Azerbaijani armed forces made another attempt of an attack at the combat position of the “Anv” (“Fearless”) Tavush on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border. The enemy was driven back, suffering significant losses.
