PanARMENIAN.Net – Armenian Foreign Minister Zohrab Mnatsakanyan had a telephone conversation with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov on Wednesday, August 26.
Mnatsakanyan and Lavrov discussed the escalation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border in mid-July and the Nagorno Karabakh settlement process.
Mnatsakanyan noted that the Armenian-Russian cooperation is key when it comes to maintaining peace, stability and security in the region.
The two also exchanged views on issues concerning the Armenian-Russian allied relations, the Armenian Foreign Ministry reported.
The phone talk came after Lavrov said in a recent interview that the decision of the Armenian side to revive an old border checkpoint, located 15 km from the Azerbaijani export pipelines, caused the escalation on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border in July.
The situation on the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan escalated on July 12, with Azerbaijan launching several unsuccessful infiltration attempts throughout the next week. The Azerbaijani military also used artillery and combat drones to target civilian homes in several border settlements in Armenia. Five servicemen of the Armenian army were killed, while Azerbaijan reported 12 deaths. In recent weeks, though, the situation has been relatively calm.
