Armenia ex-President: Uniting a divided society is key

PanARMENIAN.Net – Third President, head of the Republican party Serzh Sargsyan stopped by a polling station in the Armenian capital city of to cast his ballot “for secure, sovereign, economically developed Republics of Armenia and Artsakh, for a powerful army, the inviolability of borders and reconciliation among the society.”

“Our main task is to unite a divided society where nothing can be achieved: neither security nor economic progress,” he told reporters on Sunday, June 20.

In response to a question about forming a coalition with Hayastan (Armenia) bloc, Sargsyan said the matter would be discussed only after the elections.

The former President maintained that the entire law enforcement system, especially in the last days of the campaign, was “obviously instructed to use brute force against us.” According to him, illegal arrests and searches without court decisions have taken place.

Acting Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced on March 18 that Armenia will hold snap parliamentary elections on June 20. The PM came under fire after signing a statement with the Russian and Azerbaijani Presidents to end the war in Nagorno- almost 45 days after the start of the military hostilities. Under the deal, the Armenian side was forced to return all the seven regions surrounding Karabakh, having lost a part of Karabakh itself in hostilities.
