The President of Armenia has nominated its candidate for the post of member of the constitutional court

YEREVAN, Aug 4 – Sputnik. The President of Armenia Armen Sargsyan re-nominated Arthur Stepanyan as judge of the constitutional court. About it reports a press-service of the President.

From 9 April 2018, when Sargsyan took office as President, until may 30, 2019 he presented to the National Assembly 5 candidates for constitutional court judges. Parliament rejected 4 of them.

Candidate Stepanyan, the President puts forward for the second time. The first time she was rejected on 29 may 2019.

The decision on nomination made in order of priority on the basis of the list formed a consultative working group, which was established by the President.

At a meeting with representatives of the Commission on constitutional changes, the President noted that the existing, General meeting of judges and the government/Parliament the power to appoint judges (and not to propose candidates) would be more consistent with the “logic and spirit” of the Constitution and the purposes of the judicial-legal reforms.

In this case, in his opinion, each would be responsible for their choices. In KC it would be a balance that would ensure the independence of the judiciary, since they would be free from the influence of political changes.

In addition, effective and fully functioning the most important democratic principle of checks and balances, and would be provided by an impartial constitutional justice.

Earlier, the government of Armenia decided on their candidate for judge of the COP. They became Vahram Avetisyan. In turn, the General meeting of judges chose yervant Khundkaryan as a candidate member of the CC of .

We will remind, the National Assembly of Armenia adopted amendments to the law “On the constitutional court” on June 30. According to them, the powers of all constitutional court judges are limited to 12 years.

After the adoption of the amendments was dismissed by the three judges who worked more than 12 years: Alvina Gyulumyan, Hrant Nazaryan and Felix Tokhyan. The chief justice Hrayr Tovmasyan became the ordinary judge. Instead, they will now be elected a new judge.
